How Giovanni was developed

Take a well-known Hollywood hair stylist with an alert ear to the growing consumer demands for natural products without chemical additives or animal by-products. That’s how Los Angeles hair stylist to the stars, Arthur Giovanni came to develop his own range of natural hair care products which is now available in New Zealand.

The Giovanni range owes its success to an allergic skin reaction suffered by Arthur Giovanni from applying product to customers’ hair day after day. He tried many products searching for a hair care line that would not cause a skin reaction.

At the suggestion of a friend, a leading nutritionist in the health food industry, he changed his diet, and his skin problem began to clear up – but never completely. So, he started in a small way, by himself, to create nutritional type hair products, and after using them, he noticed that his skin condition disappeared. At the same time he saw that the hair he worked on looked better, brighter, and became easier to manage. He explored the possibility of creating his own professional hair care products with a base consisting of vitamins, herbs, minerals, proteins, and nutrients. He felt that such a range would also have greater predictability (i.e. no surprise chemical reactions such as oxidation of colour, etc.) and create ultimate hair health.

In 1977, he met up with Dr. John Weaver, who was a pioneer in implementing natural essences into the cosmetology field, reinforcing Giovanni’s ideals. Weaver was instrumental in developing formulas in Jeri Redding’s early products, which eventually evolved into the present Nexus line. Weaver also did the pilot runs for this currently popular line.

Coupling Weaver’s expertise with Giovanni’s direction and uncanny feel for what was truly needed in hair care, the whole range of Giovanni products was introduced to selected salons throughout the US, Europe, and the Orient.
